From Classroom to Community: A Law Student’s Journey at the Legal Help Centre

March 10, 2025 —
As I work through my last year at Robson Hall, I find myself reflecting on my time as a law student and the numerous opportunities that I have had the privilege of participating in. While I am grateful for every opportunity law school has presented to me, the most memorable and impactful experience that I had as a law student was participating in the Externship Program at the Legal Help Centre (LHC).

BComm Spotlight

January 6, 2025 —
When Lily Francis is presenting a case in competition, something clicks into place, and suddenly it’s just her and the judges. She isn’t thinking about the hours of practice and case preparation; she isn’t worried about being “too much” (a holdover from a lifetime of being a big talker); she isn’t fixated on the ideas that didn’t make the cut; and she isn’t second-guessing her delivery. No, as Francis puts it, when she is presenting, everything else goes away.

On December 4 and 5, 2024, law students from the University of Manitoba Community Law Centre and the Criminal Law Group participated in the Criminal Defence Lawyers Association of Manitoba [CDLAM] annual conference. As a professional association representing the interests of Manitoba criminal defence lawyers, CDLAM brings together lawyers, law students and other justice system participants to reflect on the last year in criminal law, explore emerging issues, and call attention to the unique professional challenges of criminal defence lawyering.

Step away from the books and pick up new skills with experiential learning

November 29, 2024 —
Applied research can be independent, student lead research supported with faculty guidance, such as a thesis project, or it can be in collaboration with community partners and faculty researchers. In this experiential learning opportunity, students can conduct their own academic research. A project-based experience is an application of critical analysis and knowledge in your discipline to demonstrate learning or to address a problem.
